Throughout his career he has consulted and managed campaigns at every level, from federal to municipal and in 2018 was the general consultant for Walker Stapleton’s campaign for Colorado Governor. Fortney successfully led the campaign through a 5-way primary, despite getting outspent 5-1. Fortney oversaw Stapleton’s communication and political operation ever since Stapleton’s first 2010 campaign for State Treasurer.  In 2012, in one of the most targeted races in the country, Fortney led incumbent Congressman Scott Tipton to a 12-point win, increasing Tipton’s previous margin of victory by 8 points.

Additionally, Fortney has served as a direct mail consultant on numerous races across the country, for notable clients such as the Republican National Committee. In that capacity he has written and concepted thousands of mail pieces, winning a Pollie and Reed Award for creativity, effectiveness and design.

Fortney started his political career on Congressman Ted Poe’s congressional staff, managed several campaigns in Texas and managed a successful judicial campaign in KY. Then served as a regional political manager for the Associated Builders and Contractors. In that capacity, Fortney covered 14 states for the trade association, leading its political and fundraising efforts during the fight against the Employee Free Choice Act.

Fortney has led grassroots advocacy and earned media campaigns for corporate and trade association clients in energy, banking and healthcare. He has helped his clients garner positive media attention, set up last minute rallies and built winning coalitions.

Michael grew up in Paducah, Kentucky and is graduate of Lamar University. After 15 years in Denver, He and his wife Catharine now live in Greensboro, NC with their two sons Henry and Bo.
